Our friends Janet Morgan (Shonben, Channels) and J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels, Office of Future Plans) have a son named Callum who at 6 months was diagnosed with a genetic motor neuron disease called Type 1 SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
Type 1 SMA affects the brain’s ability to communicate with the voluntary muscles that are used for crawling, walking, head and neck control, breathing, and swallowing. Most Type 1 babies die before their second birthday. Infants who do survive into childhood face a life of occupational therapy, wheelchairs, and assistive devices. There remains no known cure.
The Cultural Society, Catlick Records, & Letterbox originally compiled this collection of songs in order to raise money for Callum’s care fund. All proceeds went directly to Janet and J. to help ensure that they would have sufficient resources to continue their pursuit of effective, lasting treatment. Though our energies here are focused on the plight of our friends, it should be noted that a cure for Callum could also mean a cure for the other thousands of infants and children who suffer from SMA.
The number and range of musicians who have variously contributed to Callum's care over the last several years has been inspiring and their work a success but Callum's illness continues: he has so far beaten the odds and is now a young boy who nevertheless still requires vigilant and sometimes costly care and accomodation.
In this light we have made *For Callum* available for download. Our aim is to continue to raise funds and awareness for Callum, mostly, but also SMA research at large.
If you'd like to donate without buying the music, you can do so directly to Callum's fund at forcallum.blogspot.com
